This introductory bundle dye workshop invites participants to explore the beauty of natural dyes by transferring the pigments and patterns of plants onto silk. This hands-on experience blends history, science, and artistry, offering a meaningful way to connect with nature’s colors and patterns. No prior experience is necessary – all are welcome to join!
Overview:
- Enjoy a seasonal tea and get to know others interested in sustainable craft.
- Gain an understanding of the history and science of natural dyes.
- Learn the symbols and properties of natural dye plants.
- Create a personalized, naturally dyed silk scarf to take home.
Materials Provided:
- Silk scarves (pre-treated with alum)
- Iron (color treatment)
- Tools for steaming (pot, stove, string)
- Handouts summarizing techniques and plant information
- Herbal tea for each participant
About the Teacher:
Sugar and Slime by Anna Cain is a design studio that researches organic materials and dyes, treating clothing as an extension of our skin and a factor of holistic well-being. Anna explores how crafting colors from plants can be used as a healing ritual to make personalized, one-of-a-kind items. She completed her undergraduate studies in Sustainable Textiles at Parsons’s School of Design and her post graduate degree in Textile Technology in Barcelona, where she is now based. With 6 years of research and experimentation in natural pigments, she is excited to share these colorful findings with her workshop participants.
More Info:
- This is an in-person workshop
- Students will have all needed materials to complete a weaving during the workshop
- Looms are used during workshops and available for purchase to take home
- The workshop will start on time, please arrive 15 minutes early.
- Our studio is located at 96 Knickerbocker Ave (corner of Thames) in Bushwick
- Each ticket is valid for enough materials for 1 guest
- All tickets are final sale and non-transferable
